I Went to the "Fraser Valley Boat & Sportsmen's Show, BC Hunting Show & Country Living Show". It was a good way to kill the afternoon, but I was less then impressed. It should be called "Big Boys, who love big toys and especially TRUCKS". I've always been curious when people say that are outdoors types, then the load into there mutherfucking huge ass trucks, pulling huge ass boats, and tons of electronic gear. Maybe I'm jealous because I can't afford all that gear, or maybe It's because I find all the crap a bit offensive. I like to get out into nature to enjoy, not to run it over and with my big ass truck and big ass boat. Mind you, I love toys, and there was tons of toys there.

I have been thinking about upgrading some of my outdoors gear. Stacey and I have talked about getting each other a good tent for our birthdays. As well, I'm still half looking around for a new canoe, GPS and compass. I doubt I will get all this gear this year. Especially the canoe. I'd like to get an ultra-light kevlar, one that I can portage by myself, in case Stacey can't help.

I watched Mean Creek, tonight. I recommend it for anybody who likes the classic "Stand by Me". I would definitely say this was a "hidden gem" of 2004

I'm resetting up my MythBox. However, as usual, I've been getting lost in wonderful tangents. I stumbled over this article on O'Reilly Linux Dev. (As a side note, I'm a huge fan of the O'Reilly sites and books, constantly I find myself turning to them). I found the article below on the site.

I just finishing watching: I Heart Huckabees

Excellent. A little patience is required to watch it. I would recommend the movie for anybody who likes a little witty slightly offbeat movies, perhaps like Magnolia

1. It was 16c-20c all weekend.
2. I golfed FraserGlen and Valley Golf this week.
3. I was golfing in shorts, in february. How glorious is that?
4. I won 20 bucks at poker. If i had limped out early, I would of won 40-60.
5. Stacey and I tried to watch "Saw", and we simutanously turned it off.
6. We watched most of the Oscars over the phone, before Stacey got bored of beyonce's 10,000 performance, and went to sleep.
7. I downloaded albums Montreal' "The Stars" and Britain's "The Kills"

I don't talk about my Vonage voice service alot, because, it just works. I love it. From web based Voicemail to automatic ring-down to my cell phone, it's just works amazing. Plus, at 19.99 a month (around 24 after taxes), how can i go wrong? I have had a few funky experiences. Today when I called Fed-ex, it was routed to the states call center instead of Canada, and I've heard that calling Pizza Hut (310-1010) doesn't work either, but in both cases, they can easily overcome. Monday Afternoon, Its 12c and sunny in abbey. Rumor has it that the golden horseshoe got hit by a snowstorm. Gotta love that! :) I should be golfing instead of posting, however, I'm trying to continue my streak of posting here.

1. I have been told that grammar and spelling on my postings suck. As a rule, I try to spell check, and proof read my postings. However, sometimes like yesterday, I leave the blogs open for a long period of time, so instead of losing them, I just post them up. I suppose I could set them as draft, but then I might never post them or even worse, they loose that "In the moment" feeling. Anyways, yes, Stacey I will try harder to correct my grammar and spelling.

2. Speaking of Blogs, recently there has been a ton of hype around them . I guess they are the "thing of the moment". Time magazine covered blogging, and this past weekends Vancouver Sun (link?) there was quite a spread on blogging. However, I hope all this hype does not burn blogs out. I really enjoy blogging and reading blogs. All this attention to blogging has already attracted the eyes of the big boys, the corporate whores and the people who generally pollute the net. For instance, all this hype has lead to a large increase in blog comment spam. The Vancouver sun article quoted somebody (I wish I had the quote) as saying that blogs might lead to the end of corporate media. I shutter every time I hear this sort of crap. Mp3's haven't caused the downfall of the music industry (Yet, maybe someday..), the web store hasn't caused the death of retail, instead we've seen more of a convergence to a clicks' and mortar concept. As far as blogs go, I think that people are still timid to post their actually thoughts. Now that we are all given a forum to speak, we get up on are soap boxes, and edit ourselves. I rarely post blogs that have any sort of personal sediment. With this idea, I do think we will start to see the blog locked down a little more to create more communities of bloggers. I could possibly see the blog morf into a forum/BBS style system, where it's a group of people with common interests blogging, and we start to chose who can read our blogs. In this more intimate setting, bloggers will probably get out shells and actually express their thoughts.

To summarize, It's funny, now that we are empowered with a soap box to shout from,
we are all chicken shit to say what we are actually thinking. :)

Sunday morning. Arf. 4 posts yesturday. Can You tell I'm back in BC and bored/lonely?


Last summer, CBC Radio did "50 Tracks list of essential popular music".

Now they are back with 50 Tracks of Canadian pop songs

So far, they are up the 80's round 1. I'd have to say comparing the 80s, where they picked such songs (so far) as "Rise Up", "High School Confidential", to the 70s where they introduced such classics as "Takin' Care Of Business", "Heart of Gold", "American Women" and "Sundown", the 70's seem to still define "Candian Rock" as we know it. It's still preety hard to go a down and listen to rock radio in canada an not hear at least 1 of the songs from the 70s. I will agree that songs like "Try" by Blue Rodeo are amazing songs, and truely define a time in canadian music, I'm just not sure (unfortunally) if they have made the lasting impact like "American Women". Only "I'm and adult now", from the list has seemed to make a lasting impact on canadian music. I belive another eposide of the 80's is still to come. I'd like to see some early Tragically Hip, Bryan Adams, Rush, perhaps (laugh if you will) Men with out Hats or Glass Tiger. Can anybody question the fact the moronic "Safety Dance" is sill being played on Radio?

Anyway, Iove the "50 Songs" series. Again, CBC Radio does it again with a compelling reason for me to actually listen to the radio.

Le Tigre is on CBCRADIO3 (Actually on CBC RADIO2 Saturday Nights). I'm listening to the Toronto webcast, and the concert is P-h-a-t. (I think that word went out years ago). Anyways, It's a great performance.

I disagree with your assessment of Dvorak's article. I sometimes
disagree with him, but I really don't think he paints MythTV in a
negative light whatsoever. This is posted for the purposes of
academic discussion about the article and its implications.

While you have surely read about HP Media Centers and new DVRs from
cable providers, the real action is underground: a slow and steady
invasion of incredible products created by slick young coders who are
sick of products designed not to make life easier but to appease a
Hollywood preoccupied with digital rights management. The leader in
this effort is MythTV, perhaps the most powerful DVR yet devised.

MythTV is all the rage among high-level engineering types in Silicon
Valley. It's the brainchild of 26-year-old Isaac Richards, who told me
he started it two and a half years ago because he "was bored." MythTV
is a free software system written in C++ that, when combined with
various TV tuner, audio, and other cards, will turn a small computer
into a slick, powerful, feature-rich DVR. Do you hate commercials? You
can set it up so that it doesn't just skip commercials in playback but
never records them in the first place, so there's nothing to skip.

The software also incorporates MP3/Ogg features, along with slide
shows and everything else you can imagine, including WebTV-like
functionality for the TV set. While Richards has carefully avoided
adding any illegal features, such as DeCSS for ripping DVDs, the
architecture of the product works with plug-ins. In no time, someone
anonymously threw a plug-in into the ether that allows a MythTV box to
rip DVDs and strip out both CSS and Macrovision code so the material
can be transcoded. This means that MPEG-2 DVDs can easily be turned
into MPEG-4 files and watched on a laptop or even passed around
trading networks. Worried about country codes? Forget it, they're
gone.

Richards is working on the 17th version of the software and has about
15 coders working with the source code, adding features, debugging,
and tweaking.

What do the MythTV folks get out of all this, besides praise? If you
listen to them (and the users), they get TV the way they want it.

This movement doesn't stop here. MythTV is just the tip of a
multimedia iceberg that has managed to float under the radar so far.
For example, at CES, as far as I could tell only Transmeta was showing
a MythTV lash-up. Few showgoers had a clue as to what they were
looking at.

MythTV is a Linux-based system and requires some knowledge to set up.
Windows users are seeing a similar effort called myHTPC (my Home
Theater Personal Computer), a much looser initiative that first
appeared in detail in 2002. myHTPC is not a wide-open architecture
like MythTV, and it seems to emphasize quality imagery, especially by
incorporating various line doublers and other tweaks that are out
there if you look hard enough.

Probably the most interesting of these is DScaler, found at
http://www.dscaler.com www.dscaler.com . According to its Web site,
the project has a simple goal: "The DScaler project is an ongoing
attempt to get the best video quality possible from a Windows PC."
Like the MythTV team, these folks are essentially using the
open-source approach to public development. Headed by deinterlacing
expert John Adcock, they're producing code that gives you the
image-improvement power that was once the domain of Faroudja, whose
line doublers used to cost thousands of dollars.

All this activity within the video-image realm is a result of needing
to find a purpose for the wasted power of today's processors. We've
been waiting for a jazzy new direction in personal computing, and this
appears to be it. This is the real convergence we've been told about.
And what's interesting is, yet again, it's the small shops with the
smart young coders doing all the heavy lifting.

Everyone I know who has ever seen or played with MythTV wants it, but
it's a do-it-yourself project and not for the timid. Eventually that
will change as packagers appear and bundle prebuilt systems together.
There are other implications of all this. In a changing universe,
technologists will refuse to be hemmed in by artificial roadblocks
created for the purpose of maintaining the status quo. Microsoft and
Hollywood and whoever else can create all the DRM schemes they want;
they can sue college kids for trading songs, block trading networks,
shut down BitTorrent systems-but it won't do them any good. The forces
of "We want it our way" will overpower them again and again, because
that's the way technology works.

And this will all be shared. In a networked, computer-based world, the
sense of community breeds a socialistic desire to share, not covet.
This mentality is at the root of all the open-source activity and
cannot be ignored or denied. I want my MythTV.

I love my MythTV. I use KnoppMyth as the basis for my box. It lets me record Smurfs and The National, and watch them back to back for a surreal experience.

Halifax Snow Storm 

Well, no talk of Halifax today. I'll get on that sometime this week. Instead, on the eve of the cancellation of the NHL season, I think it's time to talk about it. Some how, up to this point, i haven't talked at all about the NHL Lockout. Perhaps, I'm like every other good canadian hockey fan. I love the game, but I don't give a fuck about the business side of it. I want hockey back, i want the NHL and the NHLPA to come to an agreement. I don't care about contraction and salary caps or salary taxes. I care about hockey in hockey markets, such as Winnipeg, Hamilton and Halifax. I care about ticket prices, and resonsible conession prices. Most of all, I care about quality, old-time hockey night on Saturday night on the cbc. As for whatever Gary Bettman and Bob Goodenow think. I really, don't care, I wish they'd get together, have a few beers, perhaps scrap it out and get the deal done, like canadian. Leave it to the lawyers and the suits to figure out the detials.

I have no idea how it lead me to a MTV website about "Best teen movies".. Anyhow, it's actually a pretty good recap of some of the more popular teen movies of the last 20 years. Except "A Cinderella Story" What the hell is that? Does the Duff Family Own MTV Stock? How does that rate? This list is nowhere complete. It's missing such classics as "Pump up the Volume", "Dazed and Confused", "Boyz n the Hood" and the ultimate teen romance "Say Anything"..

I stumbed upon a very interesting read, the blog Baghdad Burning. The blog is written by a women who lives in Baghdad. It's a different look at the streets of Iraq. It's a real different side of war then what us westerners see on TV. Baghdad Burning

On the flip side, It looks like CBFTW has finally re-emerged with a brief posting; My War: The War's Not Over. There is a rumor that he is written a book about his experiences. I really enjoy his blog, and I'm looking forward to the book. I hope it covers some of the controversy he faced by being a soldier that blogs.

New video for the Postal Service is out. If this does help them go the way of Modest Mouse or Franz Ferdinand, there is no mainstream indie rawk justice. I know this album is two years old.. I was highly influenced by "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack. It's preety obvious if you have heard the album. It's just a damn fun soundtrack. I love the brazilian (I think) interpretation of the Bowie songs. I know other sites will probably refer to them as filler and "novelty". But they are just too damn good. I think the reviewer at pitchfork actually agrees with me for once. Oh, and I manged to sneak the new Ben Lee single in there. Along with the Fiest track, I think it's my favorite song on the album. For today, anyways :)

Oh, I'm going to halifax the end of this week for 3 week course on HF Tx's. I have never been their before. Hopefully, i'll be able to catch some music while I'm there. Maybe I'll even post a couple photos from the trip.

I rediscovered Ben Lee a year ago so. He constantly puts out outstanding under-appreciated pop music. His new single is just over the top good time fun. I think John Sakamoto but it correctly:

This song is pure pop genius - and that's the way I like it.

Ahh. Canadian Music. I belive it's been said that art is a reflection of culture. I think tonight's Canada for Asia is a true reflection of our culture and provided a glimpse of what "Canada" true represents. Some where between the gangly, but somewhat between beutiful Dan lanois (SP?) and the barenaked blue-grass inspired version of "one week" , a very unique Canadian experience happend.. With Ron Mclean as the host. (Aside, In what other country is would a a geeky sports icon like Ron MacLean get chosen to host an event of such important meaning?) The kickoff featuring a choir anchored by rock heavy weights Marc Jordan, Emm Gryner, Kalan Porter and Tom Cochrane. Now, I consider myself up on Canadian music. I love Emm gryner, and Tom Cochrane is cool, in that "Boy Inside the Man" kind way. I know he organized the event, but could you picture the american equivalent? It would probaby have Chris Rock or Regis Philbin hosting it. And the and glitz and ego of the American equalvant, which wasn't displayed at all during the show. Would the Grammys think to invite aborignals? Not unless they were part of some Dick Clark sideshow. The event wrapped up with a duet by Bryan Adams and Anne Murray. I suppose the only disappointment with the entire event is that they didn't somehow work in some well known hip hop. I know there was a couple R&B/Hip Hop peformances.. But I'm sure K-OS, could of been presuaded to play. As far as the finish. It was sort of weak. I'm thinking a mini "Tears are not enough" redux, centered with Anne, Bryan and Tom would of been an old-school cool.

On a completey unrelated note, but still dealing with Canadian music: I finally listened to the Fiest album, it is outstanding. Amazing is a ton of difference influences and still flowing throughout the album. It is a acoustic, jazzy, dancable soul masterpiece. I had already picked "mushaboom" as one of the top singles.. But I was very suprised how good the rest of the album is. I guess I should not expect any less from a founding member of The Broken Social Scene. It is now added to the list of best albums of 2004.

A ton of Canadian Artists are getting together for it.. From all genres.. It's just getting over in the east.. And just starting in the west.. It's for a good cause. Good Job everybody.. And to top it all off, a Anne Murray and Bryan Adams Duet!! Rock on.

I havne't posted anything at all on my blog about my god damn sexy, KnoppMyth Box. I'm considering putting up a new blog, just for my Mythbox to track my changes, and show the world (like you care) what and how i have set it up. However, right now my box is very generic. I'm still just fine tuning the core componets, and making sure everythingis working. Currently, the Live TV broadcast still like to hang all the time. I have to get deep and dirty, and start really examining my /var/logs and seeing if anything is poking it's head up there.

anyways, in my tip #1, from "Prosonik's Bargin Basement Myth tips and Hacks"
-Use "Wget" to find the proper address of the streams, when adding new ones to Mythstream
For example. I want to listen to "CBC Radio 1".. Head off to their streaming page.. and take a look around.. CBC Radio is kind. When you click "Go directly to our full list of streaming URLs.", it takes a list of urls for cbc radio stations across the country. However, this is not terribly useful to us. We are are loooking for a "mms://xxx..xxx.xxx/CBC_RADIO"

Anyhow, with a little help of friend "WGET".. you do the following

then
mythtv@mythbox:~ $ pic cbcr1-vancouver.asx
.lf 1 cbcr1-vancouver.asx

As show, correct url for CBC Radio Vancouver is revealed. This trick works for almost all formats. I've seen people try to use Ethreal etc to examine the packets, but i think this is alot easier. This trick also works for any radio station that streams in MP3/OGG and realudio.. All you do, is look fo the "http://www.blab.com/radio.pls or radio.m3u or .ra. Wget that url, and again use pic to examine the file. Sometimes you can get really lucky and you have to do is examine the source of the webpage, for the same sort of string.

Hmm. Finally getting around to starting the "Best of". I actually hate these things. I love reading them, but I hate doing them. I I allways know i forget great albums that I have forgotten over the year.. I'll revise this list, and add a few more comments in there. I don't really consider this a "Best of", some of these albums are not groundbreaking, others are not works of arts. However, all of them have seen heavy rotation on my winamp, car or Mp3 Player.

Christmas is two days away. I have been doing the "12 Days" for Stacey. Today, is day #10. Figuring at what to do for the first nine was a real challange, I think the last couple will be a walk in the park.

Well, the end of the year is near, and that marks the begin of the "Best of the year" lists. I've started to compile my own. I have about a 130 or so songs to sort through. I fashion of last year, I'll just ram them up, in no particular order. Any songs that were super good for whatever reason, I'll annotate in some fashion.

To start things off, WOXY has posted their 97 best. I agree with 2/3 of this list. However, a couple of my favorite records did not chart at all. "Let's bottle Bohemia" By the Thrills, "Elk Lake serenade" by Hayden and "In Between Evolution" by the Tragically Hip.

Legendary Canadian author Pierre Berton died Tuesday. Oddly Enough, I had a conversation with Stacey a few days ago, on how I haven't yet read any of his books, but it was on my list to do. With his death, I believe it's more important then ever to recognize his accomplishments, and I will take the time to introduce myself to some of his works.

CBC as usual, has provided a nice article on him. I wonder what effect his death would of done for CBC's "The Greatest Canadian".

While, I'm not sure if I agree with the point of "The Superficial", week by week, I'm drawn more to read it. While there are many sites that offer nipple slips and quasi-celebrity porn, none do it with the halirous star bashing editoral content. Even if the photo offend your sensibilties, the rants make this site worth visiting.

The Pardox of my brain. While a blog traditionaly a foroum for ones thoughts, opions, rantings and recouts of the day, my blog seems to be a mix-match diary of music, media, politics, ranting, and the odd truely personal moment. I'm sure a pyhcitrist would jump all over the fact i'd rather recount a funny pitchfork review, then spilt my brain and heart open to the mass-public. I know I could talk about so much. My recent trip back rock and roll trip back to Toronto. The Pixies and Hip concerts I have attended. I could rant about a family members birthday party, where it was an intresting and odd mix of current and past friends.. I could talk about George W and his canadian visit. Finally, I could rant chose of Tommy Douglas as the "Greastest Canadian". But I won't..

Gwen Stefani of No Doubt fame has a new solo record out. After only having the chance to hear the first single "What are you waiting for?", I had already decided that it was preety well a piece of trash. While sonically the track is catchy, however the lyrics are completly garbage.

Nothing annoys me more then a rock star whinning about the pressures of rock stardom. I think another great example of this is "Hollywood", probably the biggest piece of shit Maddona has put out in recent years.

I can't find anything rewarding about lyrics that whine about the fact that celeberity has effected their lives. I'm so sorry Gwen, that you have a million dollar contract, and by-god you have to produce a hit album. That's almost like having a job, and having actually to work. And Maddonna, I'm so sorry that the pressures of being super-star in hollywood has finally effected you. Especailly, now that you ran away to Britian, and my gosh, merried a director. There is no better way to espcape the business, then by marrying a person that help build it. Maybe Guy Ritchie could direct a movie about the pressures of being a birtish directory trying to be taking serisouly in the american film industry. The soundtrack could feature a deut with with Gwen and Madonna singing about the pressures of having celberity marriage. Maybe It could star Nicole Kidman, and have a cameo with Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz.

After reading the pitchfork review, I guess Im not the only one who doesn't approve of the new Gwen album. I almost fell off my chair laughing at the attached snippet from the review.

On a side note, I'm reading "Pregnant without Intercourse" quite often. I like the mix of Canadian politics and Rock and Roll.

Okay, this is sort of cool. Next summers blockbuster COULD be cool.. Willy Wonka, and the Dukes Of Hazzard, however, what the hell is with Jessica Simpson as Daisy ? I suppose she has the right "look", but a)can she act? I mean this a is comedy, she's with Knoxville and Seann William Scott, not exact students of Shakespeare themselves. However.. At least they have ACTED before. And I'm talking a some thing a little more substantial then her marriage with Nick. Perhaps before she takes on the challenging Daisy Duke roll, she could do warm-up movie by doing a with the Rock. At least then she's be on the same playing field as Scott and Knoxville.
b)Okay, and now on to the more important topic. DAISY IS BRUNETTE.. What the hell is a blonde hair Daisy? I trust the Broken lizard boys have watched a few episodes.. They should know this. Get this girl a dye job. Quickly.

I really have to start writing something a little more personal and meaty then Dukes of Hazzard rants. Maybe After watching "The Sponge Bob Squarepants Movie" this weekend, I'll be in a better mood to write a personal, introspective blog. Or maybe I'll go golfing.

I don't really think much about the pot debate. Because I'm not involved with it and not effected directly, which ever way it goes, I never really gave it a ton of thought. I've heard Pros and cons on both sides, and each have valid points. However, after reading this Macleans article, as Canadians, we should re-visit this issue again.. Why is it that are laws have not changed, because of the threat of American trade disruptions? I know they are largest trading partner, but we have the right to deal with based on our own canadian morality, just as they have the right to refuse trade based on their American morality. However, according to this article, "The amount of marijuana seized at the Mexican-U.S. border is more than 100 times greater than the amount caught heading south from Canada", it makes me deeply suspicious that there is deeper issues at bay.

I'm suprised I just found out about this little "SP2" quirk now. It appears starting with SP2, Microsoft has started to limit the amount of simultaneous TCP connections to 10. Previously it was unlimited. I wonder if this is a backhanded attack on P2P. I assume, for every p2p connection, there is a TCP connection as well. Limiting the amount of available ports would inevitably hinder multi-sourced transfers.. A possible answer in why lately my torrent d/ls has been slower.

Anyways, somebody has posted a fix for it. I'm sure there is a ton of security risks involved with using a non-standard backported file.. I won't suggest this fix to any of my "uninformed" friends.

CBC News: George Stroumboulopoulos departs MuchMusic

I gave up watching much a couple year ago, but it seems like then end of another era at Much . Other then the odd guest appearances of Ed the Sock, the Odd Going coastal and Late Friday episodes of THE WEDGE, It MuchMusic has lost one of it's last redeeming qualities. It will be interesting to see how George digs his teeth into something a little deeper then the latest Britney rumor. While, I'd rather not was much more thought on Much, but my guesss is that the are going to replace George with some sort of santantized pseudopunk Asheele Simpson wannabe.

FireFox 1.0 has finally been released. I've been using Firefox since about version .6 or so. At first Firefox was just a curiosity, I didn't the old Netscape like mozilla browser. It was big, and bulky and ugly. Firefox, was it's little brother a odd creature with a few quirks, however the slim, plugin design gave it a huge up swing. I was in control of what features my browser would have. And then, came the plugins. Adblock to be specifc. I was sold. From that point on in, Firefox is my first install on a new install. When faced in environments where IE is still the standard, I find myself hitting "CTR-T", in hopes a new tab, rather then a window would appear.
Firefox has grown into a mature well designed web browser. It is THE BROWSER to beat. Finally, with the release of 1.0, Firefox is ready for prime-time.

I figure it out. I understand what happened. I know why the election results turned out the way they did. People across American. They were busy celebrating the Red Sox's Victory. They were too busy lamenting over the Lakers starting lineup:

I'm sure the boys over in Iraq are thanking all you right voting Americans now. Really, I am sure they are. I was always under the presumption that Americans believed in freedom. Isn't that the "American Way?". On the issue of gay rights, somehow, taking away somebody's freedom, their RIGHT to love whoever they want to. I guess it's not a choose of freedom to merry the person that one loves. I guess that isn't an expression of freedom. Instead, they use their freedom to vote for a government that has lead a relentless assault on their personal freedoms and rights, while waving the flag, guns a' blazing and praying to Jesus. I guess I should of bought Haliburton stocks yesterday. I think they will be holding their value for at least another for years. George W. Bush, and middle America I congratulate you. You have guaranteed another four years of great angry punk music.

I fear with all this hype, that Americans will think that the Kerry platform is Pro-Hollywood and disconnected from average voter. However, any effort to get the american public to get out and vote, and talk politics is a great thing.

Now if only Canada could encourage and maintain a youthful open exchange of politics and ideas. We could use some new dialogues and policies that connect with the average Canadian.

Tegan and Sara "So Jealous" was released today. No mp3's or "go and download" for this one.. Their last album "If it was you" is one on my favorite album in at least the last 3 years. I plan on buying it tomorrow from a traditional retailer.. However it is available from:
