This one is for you Rex

I'll skip any more articles to post a cup half empty post. Stacey is here this weekend, and I'm absolutely delighted to have her here. I have not seen her since Valentines day. Unfortunately, Its 10:00pm (PST), she is currently jet legged and sleeping, and instead of going in there and 'waking her up, I'm here bloggin. How retarded is that? We should be midway through a bottle of wine, well into the Miles Davis, and doing anything but blogging. I'm not sure what that says about our relationship. We have defiantly got to that "comfortable" stage.

Speaking of the "comfortable stage", I knew we had hit that stage, when she started to pull the freaky mutant hairs out of my back, and I started to fart in front of her. But I digress..

VOIP in Trouble?
An interesting Article concerning VOIP service, and broadband giving their own products preferential treatment on their networks. I love my vonage. I'm not sure iif there is a way to see if Shaw is going to give priority to their soon to be launched voip product. I will have to do more research into the topic.

PBS | I, Cringely . Archived Column: "The Best days of Voice-over-IP Telephone Service May Already Have Passed

By Robert X. Cringely

These are heady days for Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone services. From Vonage to Packet8 to Skype and a hundred more besides, several million people around the world are enjoying really cheap phone calls that are carried primarily over the Internet. But that fun may be diminishing soon because the big Internet service providers, which is to say the big telephone and cable TV companies, are about to start taking back that third-party VoIP traffic, leaving Vonage and the others at a distinct disadvantage."

More Fun with MythTv.. Playing with .iso's

I wanted to play .isos. Myth used to play them directly using mplayer.. but in Knoppmyth R5A10, it wasn't working properly.. So here is my quest and answer..

----

Post subject: Problems with XINE and iso's
Hi All,

I know this has been discussed to death, but I'm having a problem with xine and playing isos.. Using r10, I'm trying to watch isos.. with past version, (in my experiences), you didn't even need to setup mplayer.. You just dumped the iso into the directly, and played it like a normal avi.. However, it's not working now. After a quick check of the threads, it looks like people are adding a .iso extention to the file type menu and then using 'xine %s'. However, I have had no luck getting this to work. xine fires up, and then freezes on the splash, and that's it. I checked and I'm using .99 version of xine. I know 1.0 is out, but I don't see debs around..

So I guess its a two part question
1)Has anybody else experienced this? did i miss a setting?
or
2)Will building xine 1.0 from scratch resolve my problems?

thanks

i had

xine dvd:/%s

and needed

xine -pq -V Xv -f -r anamorphic -g --no-splash --no-logo dvd://%s/

anyway here is the link

Maroon 5 and the black keetle..
Isn't this a case of a the pot calling the kettle black?

From stereogum: "Maroon 5: 'We Suck Less Than Creed'

Hot on the heels of last week's 50 Cent/Game feud, Maroon 5's Adam Levine is picking a fight with another bland creation, albeit one that disbanded last year. Via LA Times...

Adam Levine: 'People hated Creed. They don't hate us. At worst, they just don't really like us. Creed ... had that attitude, they pontificated about how great they were, they had a horribly generic band. They were easy to hate and we're just, you know, easy to disregard.'

Can't really argue with that."

Argha. My Inet Connection has been complete crap over the last week. I finally got mad, and phoned up Shaw. However, I'd was quite impressed with the person on the other side. He knew his shit, and even more important, he recognized that it was a problem (my entire neighborhood was out), and didn't bother to ask the traditional stupid question (Have you rebooted your modem?.. Doh!!)

Anyways, the only bad thing when your have your entire house wired, is when the net goes down, everything goes down (including the phone).

The low tech answer to monday's Myth(ical) question.. Replace the onboard soundcard, with the SB audigy from my XP box. The lowtech process was; Insert card, disable onboard sound in bios, run alsaconf, run alsamixer confirm all channels are turned on, and presto, 5.1 Sound. I believe even XINE is working. I will test it further to confirm. The only funky issues was with my MSI KM4M, in the bios there is a "AUTODETECT" setting for on board sound. It had to be turned "off", and not the autodetect for alsaconf to probably detect the audigy.. Wierd..

Mondays' Myth(ical)quest for 5.1 Audio

Currently I have my Mythbox running out the line-out, to the line of my main XP computer, however, since the mythbox is the device i will be a)watching most of my movies and b)listening to music and d) I'm not big gamer, so i don't really care about sound, I have decided to hook my altec lansing 5.1 (analog) speaker up to my mythbox. However, if there was no 5.1 capabilty, there is no reason to do it. So, I have found this from the Xine website.. (I use xine within myth to play dvd's)..

xine - A Free Video Player: "Can xine produce 4-/5-channel surround audio output?

Yep, it can do that using OSS or ALSA drivers, provided that the driver supports it. However, since xine cannot detect if there are actually speakers connected to the additional channels, you'll have to activate that feature manually.

You can do this either in the config dialog while xine is running (press the config button on the xine panel and go to the AUDIO tab) or have it the complicated way by editing the config file yourself which is located in your home directory in .gxine or .xine:

audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Surround 4.0
audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Surround 4.1
audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Surround 5.1"

Finally, on recent dvd i have watched, I have noticed, they look like crap, looking into it further, it looks like i can post-process the signal, to get a sharper, cleaner picture. I would like to do this with mplayer, playing xvid's as well.. (I'm not sure about that, it will require some more research)

The death of CBC RADIO 3?

I should of caught this earlier. Listening, to CBC Radio3 over the past couple weeks, and i noticed they were making some changes. I'm a big fan Radio3 radio. I'm not such a big fan of website. I thought the weekly web magazine was a alittle much. Perhaps the backend engine allowed for the easy posting of articles. But the articles were all gloss and no depth. I welcome change. Postive Change. But I fear that this will not be postive change.

I am a fan "This Hour - with George Stromboulopoulos", and I do to wonder if he thinks the radio3 resturcting would "totaly suck". Infact, I'm going email him, and DNTO and the rest of the hipster - GenXYZ targeted CBC shows and ask them their thoughts on the changes at CBC. I think it's time to see really how "Hip, and edgy" the GenXYZ targeted CBC Shows are. They say the best way to invoke change, is to invoke change from within. I think it's time to test this.

Jetsgo provided cheap airflights between Toronto and Vancouver. They were the backbone of my relationship to Stacey, without a low-cost way of seeing each, I don't know where we would be today. I hope they can just enter bankrupcty protection, restructure and keep there pricing scheme, but I just don't think that's in the works.

Stacey was suppose to fly down easter using her Jetsgo airmiles. My parents were coming down in april. All via Jetsgo.

This is not good.

Give Your Love to SXSW
Holly Fuck Kids, Give your love to the organizers/bands @ SXSW,
Pick Up 2.6 Gigs (Yes, 2.6 Gigs) of mp3's from the bands that are playing. According to the Wired article:

"For the bands, providing a free MP3 of their music is optional. Of the more than 1,350 bands scheduled to play the festival, 758 offered an MP3. The songs can also be downloaded individually from the conference website."

This is amazing. SXSW is the premier even for up and coming bands. This is a great, legal use for technology like bittorrent. As a geek, I commend everybody involved. I am currently downloading it, and looking forward to listening to the collection.

This is the unspelled/grammar checked version of this posting

Saturday,

I Went to the "Fraser Valley Boat & Sportsmen's Show, BC Hunting Show & Country Living Show". It was a good way to kill the afternoon, but I was less then impressed. It should be called "Big Boys, who love big toys and especially TRUCKS". I've always been curious when people say that are outdoors types, then the load into there mutherfucking huge ass trucks, pulling huge ass boats, and tons of electronic gear. Maybe I'm jealous because I can't afford all that gear, or maybe It's because I find all the crap a bit offensive. I like to get out into nature to enjoy, not to run it over and with my big ass truck and big ass boat. Mind you, I love toys, and there was tons of toys there.

I have been thinking about upgrading some of my outdoors gear. Stacey and I have talked about getting each other a good tent for our birthdays. As well, I'm still half looking around for a new canoe, GPS and compass. I doubt I will get all this gear this year. Especially the canoe. I'd like to get an ultra-light kevlar, one that I can portage by myself, in case Stacey can't help.

I watched Mean Creek, tonight. I recommend it for anybody who likes the classic "Stand by Me". I would definitely say this was a "hidden gem" of 2004

I'm resetting up my MythBox. However, as usual, I've been getting lost in wonderful tangents. I stumbled over this article on O'Reilly Linux Dev. (As a side note, I'm a huge fan of the O'Reilly sites and books, constantly I find myself turning to them). I found the article below on the site.

"Freevo: Freedom For Your TV by Howard Wen -- PVRs may be the next big thing in home entertainment, but relying on a closed box leaves you few options for customization. The Freevo project is building a platform for developing television-aware applications, whether recording, timeshifting, or general-purpose mayhem. Stacey and I were talking about Lego today. I love Lego.
