Bills, Bills and wrapping your pipes

Well, Merry Freaking' Christmas. I'm offically old. As of 1 dec 05, I will have a hydro bill, a gas bill, a phone bill, a bill for the bill, and a bill for the fact i can't pay the other bills.

My web searches 6 months ago included:
"AJAX", and "Indie Music blogs"..

My present day searches include:
"how to weatherstrip a house" and "reducing your heating costs".

New gizmos of choice? Programmable thermostats and energy reducing bulbs. Projects of future? Doing a engery audit of my residence, and elemanting heat loss. Weapon of choice? Weather striping. Perhaps I'm in just in shock. I learned today that my monthly gas+hydro will be close to $200 a month.

Christians Open Minded?

A little old.. I forgot to push the "publish" button :) Non the less, some always fun random jabs the extreme right.

Intresting:

National Post: "'If you constantly marginalize us, that's when we could galvanized into one voting bloc,' he said. 'But really we're all over the map. We're pretty open-minded people.'"

Point 1. National Post: "One of the speakers who will address attendees today is Chris Kempling, a B.C. teacher who was suspended from his job as a guidance counsellor after writing a series of letters to his local paper that criticized same-sex relationships.

Point 2. National Post: "Mr. Emmanuel said the evangelical community is not necessarily going to fall in line behind Mr. Harper's Conservatives.

'I want to be careful not to be too critical, but I think Stephen Harper could do a better job defending our community,' he said. 'To be honest, I was shocked at his inability to fight for his beliefs and to keep the [sponsorship scandal] in the forefront of the debate.'"

Point 3. National Post: "The conference will also hear from Stephen Bennett, a U.S. radio personality, musician and public speaker who has flown to Canada to discuss his personal rejection of homosexuality. A self-professed 'former homosexual,' Mr. Bennett is now married to a woman and has dedicated himself to reaching out to 'homosexuals who want to escape the lifestyle.'"

Point 4. National Post: "Christians interested in social outreach and other 'compassionate endeavours' might have a natural proclivity toward Liberal or NDP candidates, he said. But he said it is the public disavowals of religion that push the evangelical constituency toward the Conservatives."

Finally. National Post: "But Mr. Emmanuel said he reached his breaking point during the 2004 federal election, when the Liberal government threatened the electorate with the Conservative party's "hidden agenda," which he believes was a thinly veiled attack on Christian beliefs."

Shutup. Damn crazy Christians. Here's a hint. Nobody wants to deal with uber right wings crazy christian beliefs. We as Canadians have larger, more pressing issues then the right-wing beliefs. It was the right wing that made Gay rights an issue in the last election. Anybody rember what happened? An Enourmous amout of Canadians said to their politicians, not "yes/no we support the issue".. It was more like "Shut up!, Why the hell are we talking about this? Can't you guys do something useful like end the hockey strike?"

In summary, SHUT UP.

Mid Range Gamer..

New System..

I'm building a new system this weekend. Upgrading a system based around a Athlon XP 1200 to a mid-range gamer. Unfortuanlly, it's not for me :( I haven't played with SATA or PCI-E, so I'll be curious of the results. In preparation, I'll be slipstreaming an XP CD, and using some sort of freeware to recover a missing XP serial key. Most of my time has been spent in these days has been spent in Linux, working on my mythbox, so it'll be a little of an XP refresher. I've never bothered to learn create how to create a slipstreamed version of XP. It will also give me a chance to try some of the newer games available.

The Manitoban Online - Not allowed to recruit on campus ...

The Manitoban Online - Not allowed to recruit on campus ...: "There has been controversy recently over whether or not the Canadian Forces should be permitted to recruit on university campuses. In September, student protestors at York University clashed with recruitment officers over a booth set up for a career fair. The York Federation of Students (YSF) and the Grassroots Anti-Imperialist Network (GRAIN) believe the Canadian Forces (CF) are in direct conflict with the standards of the university regarding human rights."

Really, I've never thought about militant university students being against the CF. I suppose I'm sort of ignorant. I'll take that pay cheque from the man. However, I believe the role of a military is to be the "pointy stick" of a nation. Baby Hugging, Politics and handshaking make the international law and policies, but somebody has to carry them out. When it comes to international law, the military becomes the face of the country. Therefore, the military's actions should reflect the view of nation through it's elected representatives. So if these so called activist are protesting against the CF recruiting on campus, I believe they are saying the nation as a whole is corrupt and violates human rights. So why not attack it at the source, the body, rather then at the stick it holds?

I guess what I'm trying to say, is a common speech for me. If you don't like what your country, your military, your city, your whatever is doing, then get involved and change it. But to protest against the CF recruiting on university campus, that's just lazy. Shut your mouth, go to Ottawa and make a difference. The nation will be better for it.

Harvey Danger - Little by Little now available for free via Bittorrent

Okay, Now this is cool.. Harvey Danger (Yes, the hype band of yesteryear) has released their new album via bittorrent in ogg and mp3 format. (Way to support OGG!) . I was a big fan of there "Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?", and to a lesser extent "King James Version". I had long though that they had broken up an until hearing a mumor on Seattles KEXP that they played a small show. Anyways, I haven't heard the album yet. I'm excited to see how Harvey Danger sounds circa 2005.

Wikipedia has an exellent entry on the band. It gives brief overview 0f the band complete with discrography and what the members have been up to over the last couple years

LASAGNA CASSEROLE

As a kid, I loved this recipe. My mother used to make a couple batches, one to eat, and one for the freezer for the quick meal nights. Later one, she divided it up into small microwavable dishes, for suppers on-the-go. It was so much better then a comparble Michelina's frozen dinners.

1 Package ground beef (525 – 600 GR)
1 – 2 garlic cloves chopped 1 28 oz. can tomato sauce
2-1/2 Cups COOKED MACARONI (I usually use elbow macaroni but penne will also work or small shells) 1 container cottage cheese, salt, oregano, parsley etc. Mozzarella & parmesan cheese

Brown ground beef in skillet. Spoon of excess fat and add garlic. Stir in tomato sauce, spices and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes. Combine cooked macaroni, cottage cheese and sauce in a 2 qt. casserole. Top with mozzarella & parmesan cheese

Bake ½ hr. at 325 degrees or microwave approximately 15 minutes.

Mulroney to B.C.: 'Go stuff it.' - and he was right!

Everybody is down on Brian. Oh, did the former prime minster of the country do? Did he actually tell the truth? He spoke his mind. NEWSFLASH TO THE WEST: If you want a "Western Leader". Tell your neighbours, tell your friends, tell the people you hate, to pick a party - and vote for it. At the same time, have them look at the actual population of the country, and then have them notice, where the population is: Onatario and Quebec. What a concept; the majority of candians are in the countries two largest provinces. SOMEHOW, they seem to "control" the election. Go figure!
When a leader (he may be a quebecer, but he's a conservative) tells it like he see's it (and he saw it right), people jump all over him. I wonder what's worse? To be Quebec 'frog' or a Western "Cry-baby"?. The power is in the vote. The power is in the poplution. If (we) the west want our voices heard, (we) the west must find a way to unite a western voice - whether it be a conservative, liberal or NDP voice. Maybe a regional party the represents the Western Canadian voice. And before you think it: I'm not speaking of the "Reform part II" which represented a of the vote - no matter how popular they were.

Anyhow, here's some more text from the article in the Vancouver Sun.

Vancouver Sun: "If they don't vote for her, I hope somebody will have the decency to tell them to go stuff it,' Mulroney told Newman. 'If they won't support a young woman from British Columbia to be prime minister of Canada, I hope they stop talking about western alienation.'

Mulroney said a Campbell government wouldn't change 'a goddamned thing,' but he believed Western Canadians simply didn't want a 'frog' from Quebec running the government."

Technology Vrs Nature

Technology, when used properly can benefit society. Geeks do good. Case in point, in the days following Katrina, grassroots efforts across the net have popped up with invaluable information using Google earth and Google Maps. The community has come together to use both these tools to provide information to friends/family and survivors of hurricane. I came across this information like most other users. I was exploring the Google earth site, and to my delight, the community has provided overlays for use with the Google Earth software. Using Google earth, I can compare a city like Hamilton, On, to New Orleans to see just how terrible the flooding is. I can fly can pan in 3D over major land marks in New Orleans. In addition, the community has come together to release detailed post-hurricane overlays. These overlays provide with a real visual sense of where the levee breaks took place and others point to news events. Now, NASA, Carnegie Mellon University, and Google have come together to provide even more overlays. You can use Google earth to fly over much of New Orleans and view the devastation for yourself. No other piece of a software or media outlet has ever before provided so much detialed infrormation. No other media source has come close to the visual impact that Google Earth provides.

Following that discovery, I found another awesome use for Google maps. A Google map hack has begun to update information on specific sites/homes using the maps as reference. Now, a friend or family member can use the site to see brief comments on specific houses.. Comments like "the Ashley's are in Prattville AL". . So very cool. I think this has so much potential in major world catastrophes. The best part, it's a grass roots idea, supported by a major corporation and university. People coming together to help people. Geeks unite!

IndyMedia and Hurricane Katrina

If your like me, your probably getting a bit sick of this whole Hurricane Katrina catastrophe. The whole Kanye west thing. The whole "Ignoring the black people" thing. Finally, George Bush. Who can forget him?

After the Hurricane, I imagine him down at his ranch; Lying in a big bed, in children's PJs watching FOX News (You know he loves FOX). George Sr. Calls up.. "Awe shucks Daddy, do I got to deal with this?" "I'm on summer break, plus Laguna beach is on tonight". "Don't I have staff that deals with this sort of stuff?".."No Jr, you have to deal with this stuff.. Show the people that your not just a cowboy, but The Bush family actually do care about our american people" "But Daddy, I do care! I care About the American People on "Laguna beach".. They got some awful cute girls worth saving!.

Anyways, if your beliefs are center or slightly right wing, I suggest browsing the indymedia coverage of Katrina. It's some interesting left-wing reading. That being said I think "Extremist" is an understatement. If your take Indymedia for the gospel, it seems like God himself dreamed up this whole Katrina mess to slap down the black residents of the south and the only real fix would to be convert to communism.

*Note: I don't want to discount this as a tragedy. I don't mean to insult black residents of the effected states. I do believe they are being marginalized , and being used as political pawns instead of victims. It does seem that certain people are obstructing the real issue. Help people that need the help. I encourage support of the American/Canadian Red Cross, and I will be making a donation

National Post: "Comrades knew him as 'a soldier's soldier,'"

While this is a bit late, I did not forget the death of Sgt. Ernest (Smokey) Smith. I feel like I do not have to say much this time. I don't have to hype a Canadian legend, who by all accounts, probably wouldn't have enjoyed the hype in the first place. The Canadian media (for a change) has been amazing with it's coverage. I am so pleased to see the coverage and honor that Canada, as a nation has put in celebrating his life. As a soldier, I felt honored to be able to pay my last respects to him, while he laid in state in Vancouver on Friday. I felt proud to be a Canadian, when I was able to witness the work and detail that was put on to honor Smokey's life.

However, during the celebration of Smokey's life, I hope a brief moment can be had remembering our current soldiers. Right now, there are brave Canadian soldiers patrolling the streets of Kandahar right now. There are families in Canada missing their loved ones, hoping for the best as they conduct these dangerous patrols. As Smokey did 60 years ago, I know that the soldiers currently in Kandahar aren't doing it for the glory or the recognition, they are doing it because they are Canadian soldiers, and that's their job. So as we mark the death of a true Canadian hero, perhaps over a glass of scotch in true Smokey style, I hope Canadians can take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by it's current soldiers and families.

For SG - Stream the New Sigur Ros

In late September, I'm of to See Sigur Ros for the first time. I know SG has been a sigur ros fan for a long time. However, other then being background music at SG's house I've never listened to them. However given SG's ability to pick out amazing concerts, I put my full faith that Sigur Ros will live up to my expectations. In addition, this will be our first concert togther after she moves here from Toronto. In the meantime, I'll prep myself by stream, drinking red wine, and looking for the deeper passion in all my music.

Mmmmh. Goodness..

I love beer. I really don't talk about it enough. I'm not an addict or a drunk or anything, but I really do love beer. Sadly enough, in a great beer province like BC, I spend most of my time drink Kokanee. Anyways, back in the old country (Ontario), there is a fantastic beer called Creemore. I recommend it for anybody who desires 'the better pint and likes their beer with a bit more body and flavor.

Anyways, I was just sent this link to the brewery and a rib recipe to boot. (Ribs and beer!!)

Mauritania???

It's been a while since my last posting. Summer seems to be flying by. In the meantime, life has keep me busy with various events like work, making jam, bailing hay, Motley Crue concerts, my vegetable garden and (most importantly) my girlfriend, Sg.

Sg moves in just under 2 months. We haven't figured out what where we are going to live. However, It doesn't really matter to me where we are going to live as I'll be just happy that we are together. We are already are planning a date to Beach 3 @ Stanley Park at Sunset. I'm truly looking forward to it. It's one of my favorite spots on the West coast and I finally get to share it with Sg.

Anyways, I haven't really been blabering too much about the news lately. It's been an interesting year so far, and I don't expect that to change. Bombings in London. The Hunt for bombers. The entire Muslim faith under a microscope. The "Is Canada next?" and "Are we ready?" debate. The plight of third world countries. Plane Crashes in Toronto. Sovereignty issues in Canada's North. Attempted Chinese takeovers of blue chip American companies. And finally, the overthrowing of the Mauritania government by it's military.

I have to admit, I had no idea that the country Mauritania even existed. However, a quick check on the CIA World Factbook reveals that it's in the North Sahara... It's also a has oil reserves, and it's (was) American friendly!.. And it is a one party Muslim state! Sound familiar? Anyways, look for your self at: CIA - The World Factbook -- Mauritania

I just read that Al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri threatened Britain with more attacks... As I stated above, it's sure been an interesting year.

Iron And Wine/Postal Service - Such Great Heights

I am thinking it's a sign
that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images
and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned

and I have to speculate that God himself
did make us into corresponding shapes
like puzzle pieces from the clay

and true, it may seem like a stretch,
but its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
head
when you're away when I am missing you to death

when you are out there on the road
for several weeks of shows
and when you scan the radio,
I hope this song will guide you home

they will see us waving from such great heights,
'come down now,'
they'll say
but everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now,'
but we'll stay...

I tried my best to leave this all on your machine
but the persistent beat it sounded
thin upon listening
and that frankly will not fly.
you will hear the shrillest highs and lowest lows with
the windows down
when this is guiding you home

they will see us waving from such great
heights, 'come down now,'
they'll say
but everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now,'
but we'll stay..."

R. St. Clare - Into your arms (Lemonheads)

I know a place where I can go, when I’m alone
Into your arms, into your arms I can go
I know a place that’s safe and warm, from the crowds
Into your arms, into your arms I can go

And if I should fall
I know I won’t be alone
Be alone anymore

I know a place where I can go, when I’m alone
Into your arms, into your arms I can go
I know a place that’s safe and warm, from the crowds
Into your arms, into your arms I can go

The Raveonettes - That Great Love Sound

Changing Your Strut When You Know I'm Behind You
Changing Your Ways Cause You Don't Know What To Do
I Only Wanna Tell You
How I Feel Inside
If Only You Could Listen
Try To Change Your Mind

So I Walk Right Up To You
And You Walk All Over Me
And I Ask You What You Want
And You Tell Me What You Need
Can't You Feel It All Come Down
Can't You Hear It All Around
At The Place Where Lost Is Found
That Great Love Sound

Talking To You Makes Me Wanna Shake And Shout
Touching You Makes Me Wanna Come Right Out
You Could Never Want Me
The Same Way I Want You

Gordon Lightfoot - If I Could

If I could sing like the poets and kings of this world
If I could rise like the wind or the tides of the sea
I would sing you to sleep my love with sweet melody
And let you dream away till the morning light returned again
To take you away from me

If I could speak with the tongues of the masters of old
If I could tame all the fleeting perceptions I hold
Would I stand in the marketplace before
To be shouted down without any warning at all, to be stood by the wall
And shot by the man in blue

If I could run with the grace of a sun-colored stallion
If I could fly like the great silver jets in the morning
If I caused the wind to change with one wave of my hand
And if I could play the final symphony and set it free
Would it mean anything to you

If I could stand like a rusty old man in his armor
If I could ride the steed that he rode in his time
I would turn his head away to the river
And let him wander through the meadow grass, wild and free
For everyone to see

If I could sing like the poets and kings of this world
If I could rise like the wind or the tides of the sea
I would sing you to sleep my love with sweet melody
And let you dream away till the morning light returned again
To take you away from me

The Doors - Light My Fire

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Aouh, come on!
Come on, babe!

Yeah! come on!
Come on!

Woaouh! yeah!

It was the greatest night of my life.
Although I still had not found a wife
I had my friends
Right there beside me.
We were close together.
We tripped the wall, we scaled the graveyard
Ancient shapes were all around us.
The wet dew felt fresh beside the fog.
Two made love in an ancient spot
One chased a rabbit into the dark
A girl got drunk and balled the dead
And I gave empty sermons to my head.
Cemetary, cool and quiet
Hate to leave your sacred lay
Dread the milky coming of the day.

Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
Aah, aah, aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah, aah, aaah!

Time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire!

All right, all right!
All right!"

Neil Diamond - I'm a believer!

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a given thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.
What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Dancing with Bruce

As previously mentioned, I heard Tegan and Sarah covering this song tonight on CBCRADIO3 tonight. I have been working on writing a nasty little email for SG for good morning thoughts, and I was hoping that the lyrics contains some goodness. Unfortunately, upon actually reading them, Dancing in the dark seem to be about trying to picking up a girl, who just won't pay any attention to you.

Dancing In The Dark: brucespringsteen.net: Bruce Springsteen
TEGAN AND SARA: IN SESSION WITH CBCRADIO 3

This performance was on tonight's rebroadcast of CBCRADIO3 (on CBCRADIO 2). The session is worth listening to for the following reasons.

A) Tegan and Sarah rule the school
B) The live version are actually better then the recorded versions.
C) They do a cover of Bruce Springsteen 'Dancing in The Dark'. Yes, 'Dancing in the Dark'. Clap your hands and say Yeah. Dancing in the dark is my all time favorite Springsteen track, and one of my childhood favorites.
D)Tegan has a great rant about the music industry, which ends when Sarah asks if Tegan's batteries ever run out.
E)Did I mention "Dancing in the Dark"?.

Update: It looks like the session has been edited, and the 'Dancing in the Dark' has been removed. Also, Tegan's great rant about the sexist music industry is gone.

Unfortunately, it's in realmedia. So realmedia (Or Real Alternative) is required.

TheStar.com - The Anti-Hit List for June 25:

"MALCOLM MIDDLETON, 'A HAPPY MEDIUM'

Sprung from the sombre confines of Arab Strap, this multi-instrumentalist sounds like he's channeled years of pent-up energy into this breakneck acoustic number. The results are reminiscent of the Nails' FM cult hit '88 Lines for 44 Women' crossed with the Primitive Radio Gods' 'Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand.' And if your musical tastes encompass both of those disparate referents, this one's for you. (From Into the Woods, http://www.malcolmmiddleton.co.uk/audiovideo.htm)"

I'm a big fan of the Anti-Hit list. I've been reading it for years. I followed it from the Sun to Eye and now to the Star. I'm delighted to hear that John Sakamoto/The Star has decided to create a podcast. However, the show is limited to 10 mins, and features on full song, and quite clips from the rest that make the list up. Back on June 25, he posted the above review for a pretty good track by Malcom Middleton. While it's very rooted in pop, I enjoy this track a lot better then his Arab Strap work.
Leslie Fiest Interview on Tofu Hut.

Indie darling no-longer, Feist still has it going on.. Check the interview, live tracks and a few of her current picks for rock'n'roll.

I'm still not sure what to think of her live show, although, I'd defiantly recommend it. It's just a little odd to see her up there with her multitrack sampler, singing her own backing vocals.

I guess she has left the Arts & Craft stable, and signed with Interscope. Maybe It's only for the States. Although, this isn't really suprising, as she was already singed to Universal Records France.

"Stay Away, or I'll be kicking your hairless, pink Muhooke"
Open Season
RENT - The Movie

Rent is one of the few musicals that I ever had the patience for. It's also one of the few musicals I've taken the time to see. I was attracted to it's story of grit and grime, and the it's billing as "Rock Opera".

I did not realize until surfing the apple trailer site, that there was a motion picture adaptation. After reviewing the site and trailer, I feel that the movie will be missing an important piece - The 'ROCK'. In making this film, hiring some of the original cast was a nice touch. However, the trailer gave me a vibe of too much of 'American Idol' and not enough of the 'Never mind the Bullocks". It also had that feel of the 'sophisticated urban' in the vein of 'How Stella got her groove back'. Perhaps it was the casting of Taye Diggs. Before the movie is released, I hope they take time to review the movie and story. Perhaps then, they will take to the editing room, and add some of grit.

It appears the station is still in beta. The selection is a little less pretentious then I expected. The sound quality isn't nearly as good as the WOXY AAC stream, but it still presents an intresting listen. I'll still support WOXY and KEXP.

July 1st Fireworks Abbotsford

July 1st Firework Abbotsford 029

Old School Meets New School

I like the illustration. It makes me giggle. I never owned an old school ghetto blaster, but I did own a late 80's dual cassette badass. It had a big old shoulder strap on it instead of a handle. I'm a geek. I know these things.

I will finally have to grow up and shut up. I suppose it's time to drop the college kid antics and prep myself for the dirty thirties.. Canada Same Sex Bill Passes - Yeah! Canada..

What a fuckin' concept. The freedom to be married to the person you love. Who would of thought? I still can't believe in 2005, this is even an issue. Hopefully the same sex debate can now be put to bed. And as a country we can sleep soundly tonight. We know our elected leaders support the Canadian ideal of personal rights and freedoms.

PS, America, it's time to follow our lead. Show the world that America still means freedom.

I'm not sure what to say about this link other then, Uhh? I know SG is out there thinking "Pros' a huge dick, and he needs to stop posting about Jessica Simpson on his blog, he obviously has some sort of Jessica fantasy". Well. No, I don't think think so.

I'm not sure what to think of this video other then; "Fit For the Strip Club." I know one thing, I'd be having a talk with my fictional teenage daughter concerning Jessica's overtly sexualized imagery.

Stacey, I don't know where your black lipstick is. I swear I didn't borrow it.

Lots of cool Mp3's. Unfortunally, I'm the kid with the baseball cap, feeling a little out of place, taking a pee beside two dudes sharing black lipstick.

Kick & Go: Bela Lugosi's Dead....: "you may see some guys sharing a tube of black lipstick at the urinal".
Go figure, He's from Western!..

Damn the Western engineering types. I know it was you bastards that were hitting on my girlfriends in the late 90s.. But I never realized you guys were actually SMART!? Being a college kid, I was allays jealous of university brats, the living away from home, the party-party attitude. However, us college kids, our retort was always "we have the hands on skills to get the job done". I guess all that Beer Drinking and pot smoking actually did pay off. I'm embarrassed that I didn't think of this. However, I would like to geek it up. Perhaps a web-based control module? Control Via Mythtv?

Anyways, props to this dude. He gets my geek of the week award. In addition, he gets an extra star beside his name for the quote:

Amen to that, My geek brother.

I'm going to lump the National into the same Joy Division loving genre as Interpol. To my ears, that's not such a bad thing.

I (heart) Spirit of the West

Can you tell tonight, that I'm suppose to be packing and cleaning my place instead of geeking out? Can you tell that I'm avoiding do the dishes?? Oh, procrastination..

Some music and songs just stick with me throughout my life. Poltical is one of the songs that hits me in the right spot. Perhaps it's because of the songs universallyrics, or it's snappy Celtic pop melody's.. Whatever it is, whenever it comes up on my playlist, I crank it and dance around like a stupid college kid.

POLITICAL Lyrics - SPIRIT OF THE WEST: "I was tired of being put right down by myself for not being what you thought you had found pulled hard in two directions by a desire to learn and my old affections when I tried to share my world with you you could not seem to tolerate the people i had grown to love they shrank under your scrutiny, became the ones you'd hate why did everything, every little thing every little thing with you and me have to be so political? I was feeling a little underwhelming about hanging around with you and feeling over cautious every word, every little look, every little sign every little phrase put me deeper in your doghouse you'd let me out to run across your world I ran into a wall you told me I built you then you'd reel me in, ream me out, pick me up push me out again -and then repeat it - chorus - too busy tripping on my tongue to try and stand my ground I can still see myself crying in your lap asking you are you happy with the man you have found? I'm grateful for what you did for me I can see things now I never would have seen today I thought about what could have been but could never be for you and me because everything, every little thing every little thing with you and me had to be so political"
HEY PHISHERS, PHUCK OFF!!!

Over the last couple weeks, the amount of Phishing emails that I have recieved has been astoushing. It seems that the adapative filter on my Thunderbird isn't catching them all. I've been tempted to do a little 'research' and find the source of the emails, but I know it's a losing battle.. So Instead, i'll post some of them here. I hope by posting them, other email users will take the time be to google up strange looking emais, and find blogs like mine and that rally to expose the scams..

I (heart) the 90's
Read the article for yourself. After a quick scan of the tracklisting.. I see Jump by Kris Kross and Walk by Pantera on the same disc. Above the 90's trends of grunge, 'euro, boybands, gansta rap and NU Metal and numerous others, retrospectively I think you can look at the fragmenting of pop music as the biggest trend of the 90s. The kid who was listening to Kriss Kross probably swiped his brothers Pantera tape and his dads Johnny Cash, started up a rock band and is now making music being played on ipods everywhere.

The Canadian Legal System Can Work
Well, some days I worry about the legal system giving in to political pressure, however, I think in this case, if it did, it did for a good reason.

I don't want to hype or critique the case anymore then necessary, but as a society, do we really want to let any former killer of Homolkas nature, have a relationship with another criminal? Especially one that killed his girlfriend? The only logical reason I can think that a pair of murders should have any sort of relationship or friendship together, is perhaps a support group for when they are re-introduced to society to support the challenges that they face.

That being said, as with most right-wing Canadians, and growing up in Burlington, I'd personally like to see Holmoka spend the rest of her life in a jail cell, a very small jail cell, one that doesn't see the light of day. So perhaps she'll violate her release conditions and end up back there.

A taste of WOXY Vintage

I really want to see WOXY succeed. I'm just too much of a music junkie not to love it. So, here is another attempt at WOXY Vintage propaganda. However, when it comes the music woxy plays, I guess it's best to do let the music do the talking.. So at 31 May 05 100 EST WOXY Vintage was playing:

1:37am The Sugarcubes - Eat The Menu
1:34am Siouxsie And The Banshees - Cities In Dust
1:29am Swervedriver - Rave Down
1:22am Love And Rockets - Ball Of Confusion (12' mix)
1:17am Peter Gabriel - Digging In The Dirt
1:13am Vitamin Z - Burning Flame
1:10am Husker Du - Don't Want To Know If You...
1:08am The Wonder Stuff - A Wish Away
1:03am Cock Robin - When Your Heart Is Weak
12:57am The Afghan Whigs - Mr. Superlove
A case for flag waving?

I guess this is just as much of a reason to flag wave as hockey. However, I don't think Stacey will agree..
WOXY EXPANDS!

I find my online listening time these days divided 2.1 Ways.. 1.KEXP 2.WOXY and .1 CBC RADIO3.. It looks like that will expand into 3.1 with the addition of WOXY's Vintage channel.
The have kicked off the stream by playing the annual Modern Rock 500. This is great news from a radio station, that only a year ago looked like it was on the brink of extinction. I'm glad they have decided to expand the WOXY brand, buy focusing what they do best - play a great variety of intresting and exciting music.

Mike Doughty - Busting Up a Starbucks

Of late, "Busting Up a Starbucks" one my favorite tracks. It's from his new album
"Haughty Melodic". There is another version of this track from a live set he did a couple years back, where he admits that he goes to starbucks everyday. I sort of relate to that, because like Tim Hortons, Starbucks is something that a)I'm addicted to and b)I hate the fact that I'm addicted to. However, Tim horton's addiction is something widely accepted in Canada, whereas starbucks addicts are still considered white-upper-middle-class snobs..

This is my first attempt at using the Azureus distributed tracker. If it works well, I'll be posting links regularly.

Distributed tracking, the sexy new torrent feature..

Since the death of SuperNova.org, many people in the file-sharing community have been rushing to provide solutions. While Products like EXEEM have filled the gap, some people (like me) have stayed away due to it as closed source nature. However, that has all recently whe n Azureus was the first torrent client to provide support for embedded tracking. Now, the official Bittorrent client is getting in the game.

That being said, I'm looking forward to being able to use these clients to provided the type of multimedia content that I've been to cheap to buy hosting for. I suspect allot of other bloggers will jump on the band wagon as well. I suspect the community will see an even greater increase to the podcast community.. PodCast - Because all the Kids are doing it (Pt.1)

(Not Grammer/Spelled Checked - I'm tired)

I really don't have alot of use for podcasts. I'm not a "commuter", so i don't find myself with hunks of time for listening to radios shows. However, there is a few media sources, that i have allways wished that i could get on demand.. Today, It turns out one of them has listen to me.

I have been a Fan of the "Anti-Hit List" for many years. It was a music blog, before the blog was even thought of. I started to read it in the SUN. I allways found it sort of funny that it was in the sun, because the elite hipster music fan are probably much more the Globe and Mail readers the Sun. That being said, when It moved over to "EYE", i was quite happy. It seemed to fit in well with the EYE theme. However, I allways thought that it deserved a higher profile then a free entertianment rag. Starting in January, it's has found it's way into the Toronto Star, which at first i thought was great.. Now they have locked it up, and you have to register to login.. However, It doesn't seem all bad, if they are going to continue to push boundries with technology like the podcast..

"G-Unit Brand"...
50 cent

I know that mainstream music is not music, but just a marketing tool. I'm not sure when that happened. I think the transition was around 2000 or so. It was about the time when Muchmusic/MuchMore stopped playing music, and started with "Lifestyle Programming", Whatever the fuck that is. However, when was transition that artists stopped being artists, and just a vehicle or an icon to sell shit? What the fuck is a "G-Unit" brand? And what the fuck does the G-Unit Brand have to do with Mobile phones? I know I'm not in the "urban-youth" market. I love hip-hop, but I hate the bling. From what I understand (I stopped keeping track of urban music sometime ago, G-Unit is a huge seller.. But a seller of what? A fake urban image manufactured by the heads of record and clothing companies? What ever happen to Chuck D? Do the Urban youth of today listen to Air America? Is chuck D even on it anymore? We need a does of "Fight the Power" And "9-1-1 is A joke".. More like "5-0 cent is a hoax".. Argh. There is good hip-hop out there. There is hip-hop-stars that aren't marketing tools. I will find them. I will promote them. Hip Hop needs to be refocused on the music and not the marketing.

Predator Awareness? Heartless Bastard?

Maybe if Mr. Sellers had a family, especially with a teenage daughter who lived in the golden horseshoe during this period, he's opinion would be a bit different then "Predator Awareness".

My memorys of this period is vivid. It was like the city was in locked down. No mother/daughter/wife/co-worker/sister whoever felt safe. Nobody walked the streets alone. If this Hollywood producer could feel 1/1000th of the fear that the area had, I think he'd have a different opinion. And that's even to mention the pain and the suffering that the family's of the victims went through, and are still going through today. I'm not for censorship, but I really do hope that the movie watchers of Canada will pass this one over.

andPOP | The Barbie And Ken Of Serial Killers To Be Chronicled In Deadly: "Hollywood producer Michael Sellers acknowledges the controversy of his film, but also feels that true crime films are merited in Hollywood tradition, as was Oscar-winning film Monster, which chronicled the real life story of a female serial killer’s heinous acts of violence. Sellers has emphasized that our intention behind this movie is to encourage 'Predator Awareness.'"

Where trees meet technology

Trail Repository - Main: "the Trail Repository, a database with many trails and routes in Canada"

I'm not really up on the whole GPS/mapping thing. For all of my training, It was all done using map and compass, with little or no use of a GPS. Over the last couple of years, I have seen more and more interesting uses for GPS.. I have been thinking of investing in at least USB GPS transponder for my laptop, but I haven't really looked into the Linux based options for it.
A interesting read on P2P in Canada..

Piercing the peer–to–peer myths: An examination of the Canadian experience: "Although faced with significant pressure to reform Canadian copyright law, it is increasingly apparent that the industry’s ills are not the result of peer–to–peer downloading. Moreover, the Canadian experience with private copying suggests that a levy system may provide an effective alternative to adequately compensate artists for lost royalties that may occur due to the current popularity of file sharing services."

--
I'm know everybody is all up in arms over liberal handouts in the 90's, however I think there are newer burning issues like Copyright, that need to be debated.. I know most Canadians think "Ho-hum, so we can't pir8 anymore.. " However, the larger issue here is the fact the Canadian government has decided to ignore fact, and give-in to the powerful lobbying efforts of the (Global) Recording Industry/Film Industry, and not (Publicly) actively investigate the issue for itself..

CBC's "The Hour" is in Vancouver this week

I'm a big fan of "The Hour". I'm sure die hard CBC lovers, and pop-culture haters loath the ADD rapid fire format, but it fits Georges personality perfectly, and it keeps ADD/pop-culture/news junkies watching. When 'The Hour' first started a couple months ago, I Canadian media made more of Georges nose ring, then admitting has the show has merits.

CBC.ca - The Hour: "The Hour will be broadcasting live, April 18-21, from the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver. In addition to all the regular features you've come to expect, George will also be visiting some of his favourite haunts."
Napster/Itunes Fair Use

The concept of buying DRM music has pissed me off for awhile. A couple years ago, when record companies were all hyped up over pushing DRM protected cds, I stopped by any cd that had any sort of DRM on it. The majority of my music colleciton has been converted into mp3, so why would a buy a cd that i couldn't rip?

Fastforward to 2005, and we are now living generation I(pod). I personally have not bought anything from online stores. I have two major reasons why 1. Buying the album vrs downloading it, I have the physical album. What Happens to all purchased music if you have harddrive failure? 2. I'm slowly moving everything over to Linux, alot of DRM'd music simply don't support linux.

That being said, i'm increaslying tempted d/l music from a pay service, when i can't find a good copy of the floating around. A great example of this is "Beverly Hills" by Weezer. I am making a spring mixed cd, and I'd like to include it. However, the album is not out yet, so i can't rip it. The versions I have downloaded from various file-sharing services are radio-rips or are damaged. Finally, I don't want a broken DRM'd version of the song that i can't listen to on my laptop or Mythbox. I would be happy to pay $.50->$.99 for a good clean version of Beverly Hills - In a format I can use such as MP3 or OGG

It looks like this may be the case in future if i want to circumvent the drm from napster or itunes (The itunes hack has been around for awile, but itunes only became avaible in Canada in the last 6 months). Musik release seems to be a result of reversing both the itunes and napster clients, and allows linux users to use the songs that they have legally purchased on their platform of choice. What a concept!

I stumbled across this track on pitchfork. A CN tower reference, Hidden Cameras feel, and some fun organ loop and bell chime. Sounds like indie-snob-rock heaven to me.

I don't think I could find more fitting lyrics..

This song just about wraps up how I'm feeling these days.

The Scientist Lyrics - Coldplay

Come up to meet you, Tell you I’m sorry, You don’t know how lovely you are

I had to find you, Tell you I need you, Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets, And ask me your questions, Aww let’s go back to the start

Runnin’ in circles, [sounds like] Comin’ our tails, Heads on the science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Aww take me back to the start

I was just guessin’, At numbers and figures, Pullin’ the puzzles apart

Questions of science, Science and progress, Do not speak as loud as my heart

Tell me you love me, Come back to haunt me, Oh when I rush to the start

Runnin’ in circles, [sounds like] Chasin’ our tails, Comin’ back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Aww It’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I’m goin’ back to the start

Looks Like My Sloan Catalog is going to double.

Sloan

I (heart) Sloan. I have been a fan ever since hearing the indie version of "Underwhelmed". I'd like to say that i was too cool for school, and bought Peppermint.. But the first Sloan album i bought was "Smeared". Now, to date myself, I'm almost 100% sure, I first owned smeared on cassette. How's that for too cool for school? After "Twice Removed", my love for Sloan was solidified. Thirteen years have passed since the release of Smeared, and I now hold their entire catalog in both CD and MP3 format. My collection is missing a few gems such as the plexi single from Edgefest 3 in 96.. (interestingly Enough, the Official Sloan Discography does not list this as a single, but I swear it was from 96) My collection does contain such rarities as the original 7 inch of "Stove/Smother"

However, it looks like I will have a chance to fill in the gaps in my collection. According to the MTV article they are re-releasing all their albums in the States, complete with bonus tracks. Bonus track that I don't own. So I suppose my collection is about to double. Hopefully they will be fully re-mastered, in all the rock and roll glory that is Sloan.

American Processed Cheese

Hot on the heels of Mr. T talking about not dissing your mother, Scenestars brings us this gem. I'd love to write an essay on the topic of this guys hair. However, I'm withdrawing on the heaving bashing as it's obviously some post-911 song. That being said, it is some well processed American cheese.

AudioScrobbler

I had totatly forgot that I had this winamp plug-in installed. AudioScrobbler collects stats based on the music you listen to. The site also performs the expected tricks. It displays other simular users to your listening habbits, and other band you may like. However, It's the nice clean interface that i like.

Perhaps I can figure out a way to feed the rss into this site, for some phat-ass realtime rock and roll stats.

B-U-S-Y

My parents are here this week. Life seems to be busy. I haven't touched on the death of the pope or shrivo at all. I'm sure there is lots of blogland stuff about it already. Maybe I'll blog on it next week, way after the fires have settled.

I came across this gem. From the EFF, the ins and out of blogging without getting fired..

CHUM-FM Launches PODCAST
Okay, I'm am not at all a fan of Chum-Fm (Other then the fact that ex-CFNY DJ Maie Pauts seems to work there now). However, I am pleased to see that they are launching a podcast. To really impress me, they would use Bittorrent to speed up the distribution, but it is good to see mainstream media types to offer cutting edge concepts like podcasts.

What I would really like to see is CBC RADIO 3 go the same way. I truely believe that if you could get it on demand, that it would greatly increase it's listenership.

Here is the link to the pulse24 article:

Pulse24 - Toronto's News: "as of May 2, those of you with an MP3 player will be able to listen to more than just your favourite catalogue of tunes on your way to the office. CHUM FM is offering fans a downloadable version of the Roger, Rick and Marilyn morning show"

This one is for you Rex

I'll skip any more articles to post a cup half empty post. Stacey is here this weekend, and I'm absolutely delighted to have her here. I have not seen her since Valentines day. Unfortunately, Its 10:00pm (PST), she is currently jet legged and sleeping, and instead of going in there and 'waking her up, I'm here bloggin. How retarded is that? We should be midway through a bottle of wine, well into the Miles Davis, and doing anything but blogging. I'm not sure what that says about our relationship. We have defiantly got to that "comfortable" stage.

Speaking of the "comfortable stage", I knew we had hit that stage, when she started to pull the freaky mutant hairs out of my back, and I started to fart in front of her. But I digress..

VOIP in Trouble?
An interesting Article concerning VOIP service, and broadband giving their own products preferential treatment on their networks. I love my vonage. I'm not sure iif there is a way to see if Shaw is going to give priority to their soon to be launched voip product. I will have to do more research into the topic.

PBS | I, Cringely . Archived Column: "The Best days of Voice-over-IP Telephone Service May Already Have Passed

By Robert X. Cringely

These are heady days for Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone services. From Vonage to Packet8 to Skype and a hundred more besides, several million people around the world are enjoying really cheap phone calls that are carried primarily over the Internet. But that fun may be diminishing soon because the big Internet service providers, which is to say the big telephone and cable TV companies, are about to start taking back that third-party VoIP traffic, leaving Vonage and the others at a distinct disadvantage."

More Fun with MythTv.. Playing with .iso's

I wanted to play .isos. Myth used to play them directly using mplayer.. but in Knoppmyth R5A10, it wasn't working properly.. So here is my quest and answer..

----

Post subject: Problems with XINE and iso's
Hi All,

I know this has been discussed to death, but I'm having a problem with xine and playing isos.. Using r10, I'm trying to watch isos.. with past version, (in my experiences), you didn't even need to setup mplayer.. You just dumped the iso into the directly, and played it like a normal avi.. However, it's not working now. After a quick check of the threads, it looks like people are adding a .iso extention to the file type menu and then using 'xine %s'. However, I have had no luck getting this to work. xine fires up, and then freezes on the splash, and that's it. I checked and I'm using .99 version of xine. I know 1.0 is out, but I don't see debs around..

So I guess its a two part question
1)Has anybody else experienced this? did i miss a setting?
or
2)Will building xine 1.0 from scratch resolve my problems?

thanks

I actually did some more digging, and I was missing a few options.. It also disbles the logo, goes fullscreen and sets some other junk up.

i had

xine dvd:/%s

and needed

xine -pq -V Xv -f -r anamorphic -g --no-splash --no-logo dvd://%s/

anyway here is the link
